Nominations
The Ohio Chapter of I.A.A.I. Awards Committee is seeking nominations for the awards listed below. These awards are customarily presented at the Annual Chapter Meeting.
 

GEORGE "AL" EISNAUGLE AWARD
This award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution toward the suppression of the crime of Arson in the State of Ohio. It is limited to one (1) recipient annually.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARD
A Life Membership Award may be conferred upon an active member in good standing for a period of 10 years. An individual who has rendered distinctive service to the Ohio Chapter and its purposes for a minimum of five (5) years. It is limited to one (1) recipient annually.

OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENT AWARD
This award is presented to municipalities, agencies (law enforcement or private), and companies who have developed successful programs to help reduce the incidence of arson. It is limited to two (2) recipients annually.

CERTIFICATE OF MERIT AWARD
A person or persons who have made or assisted in a special contribution to arson investigation.

INVESTIGATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
Investigator of the Year Award is presented to an individual who is an active member of the Ohio Chapter and the International Association of Arson Investigator’s. This person must have shown outstanding achievement using professional expertise, in both criminal and civil fields of arson control. The recipient shall not be a current officer or member of the Board of Directors, nor shall the recipient be a member of the Awards Committee of the Ohio Chapter. There shall be one annual investigator of the year.

PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD
A first place or second place award may be given in the categories of Arson and Accidental Fire or training photography.

Eugene Jewell Scholarship Award
This award covers tuition to the Ohio Arson School Annual Seminar for a Chapter Member interested in furthering their education in the field of Arson Investigation

Investigator of the Year...
The 2004 Investigator of the Year is..
Captain Mike Instone
Bowling Green Department
Bowling Green Fire Department Fire Captain Michael Instone, recipient of
this year's Investigator of the Year award, is a third generation
firefighter with the Bowling Green Fire Department.  His grandfather,
Morris Instone, was reported to be the first paid fire chief of the Bowling
Green Fire Department

Mike Instone was hired in 1979, became a paramedic and 1983, and began fire
investigative training in 1984.  Mike became active In Bowling Green Fire
Department investigations in 1989.  Currently, Captain Instone is the lead
department fire investigator and is a member of the Northwest Ohio Arson
Seminar committee.

In 1999, Bowling Green Fire Department experienced a series of arson fires.
Captain Instone correlated information on a group of individuals committing
break-ins and other property crimes and encouraged the Bowling Green Police
Department to be involved in the investigation of the incidences.

Over the next five years, Captain Instone involved other public agencies
including the Ohio Fire Marshal's Fire Investigation Bureau with continued
investigation to determine the person or persons involved in the rage of
arson fires.  It was found, that the individuals that were involved in the
break-ins and other property crimes also were involved in the arson fires.

Due to Captain Instone's perseverance to resolve the arson fires, search
warrants were issued and found evidence of ID and credit cards and other
personal items that were stolen from several residences that were involved
in the arson fires.  The investigation led to the apprehension, arrests,
and conviction of multiple individuals responsible for the arson fires.

2004 President's Award
Presented by past president, Keith Loreno, to a well deserving
Randy Dunn, Zanesville Fire Dept.

Chapter President Keith Loreno selected Randy Dunn from the Zanesville Fire
Department as this year's recipient of the president's award for his
assistance to President Loreno's presidency and the outstanding
achievements to the Chapter.  Randy Dunn was instrumental in the success of
the chapter's first annual fire investigation school that was held in the
Zanesville area.
 

Always the highlight of the evening, this year was no different, capped off by the exciting presentation of the IAAI LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP AWARD....
This honor was bestowed upon
Chief Marvin E. Olney (R)
Fifty Five years ago, Marvin Olney began his love for the fire service.  On July 12, 1949 he signed on as a volunteer with the Marion Township Fire Department in Columbus, Ohio.
In 1955, Chief Olney moved to Franklin Township Fire Department in Southwest Columbus where he moved through the ranks, becoming Chief in April 1965.  He remained at Franklin Township until his brief retirement in 1982.  In Jan. 1982, he took over the newly formed Perry Township Fire Department in Dublin, Ohio.  He served Perry Township until "officially" retiring in Jan of 1999. 

Chief Olney's contributions to the fire service are too numerous to list.  Some highlights include President of the Ohio Fire Chief's Association, President of the Ohio Chapter of the IAAI,  recipient of the Eisnaulgle Award and the Ohio Fire Chief's "President's Award" and Director of the Ohio Arson School (1982-2004).
Chief Olney and his wife Sally live in Delaware, Ohio and have a winter home in Bradenton, Florida.
